Archaeologists have discovered an ancient temple, hidden inside an Aztec-era pyramid in Mexico that was damaged during last September's 7.1-magnitude quake.

The upper part of the pyramid was heavily damaged during the 2017 natural disaster, so researchers from Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) wanted to give the ancient construction a quick check-up, using radar to identify whether its internal structure had been disturbed by the rumbles. "What we found could correspond to Teopanzolco's oldest temple, but more studies are needed to see if it is associated with an early phase of the Middle Postclassic period (1150-1200 AD), which would make it contemporary with the first construction phase of the Pyramid of Tenayuca, in the State of Mexico", concluded archaeologist Georgia Bravo Lopez.

A devastating quake that struck central Mexico last September gave way to a fascinating discovery: remnants of a rain god temple within an Aztec pyramid.

Scientists from Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) were examining the Teopanzolco pyramid for structural damage with a radar when they discovered the 6m x 3.9m temple.

Archaeologists said the discovery will shed new light on Tlahuica civilization.

'The pyramid suffered considerable rearrangement of the core of its structure, ' Koniecza said.

Steve Bannon must testify to counter Peter Strzok testimony, House Democrats demand
On Thursday, Strzok said the message was written late at night after Trump's campaign comments disparaging a slain US soldier. Strzok, an expert in the field of counterintelligence, had played a leading role in the Hillary Clinton investigation.

An incense burner and ceramic shards were also located among the remains.

Koniecza added: "The floor of both shrines sank and bent, which also put their stability in danger".

"Possibly, on the right side are the remains of another temple dedicated to Huitzilopochtli", Barbara Koniecza said, Fox News reports.

In addition, they claim that the structures built at Teopanzolco served as a source of inspiration for the inhabitants of Tenochtitlán, the Aztec capital that became Mexico City. On September 19, the area was struck by a 7.1 magnitude quake that killed more than 200 people and devastated the region's infrastructure.

More than 200 people were killed in Mexico City and many people were trapped under rubble when buildings were toppled.
