In the incendiary interview, with the Sun newspaper, the United States leader criticised Mrs May's handling of Brexit negotiations, hailed Boris Johnson - who quit the cabinet earlier this week - as a future and "great Prime Minister" and said there was too much immigration in Europe.

On Thursday, Trump told reporters at a press conference in Brussels that to him, Putin, was a "competitor" rather than an enemy.

The man behind the balloon said the juvenility of his idea was a match for the juvenility of the president.

Trump's comments were condemned by British politicians as it delivered an astonishing political knifing of the already embattled May, comprehensively undermining her fragile position in Britain's tortuous negotiations on leaving the European Union next year.

Trump accused the prime minister of ignoring his advice on Brexit negotiations, in remarks that echoed Johnson's private barbs that the USA president would do a better job than May in negotiations. I know they have had a lot of resignations.

Relations had never been more special, he said, and any criticism was "fake news".

US first lady Melania Trump, President Trump, British Prime Minister Theresa May and her husband Philip May watch a live military performance ahead of a dinner in Oxfordshire, U.K., on Thursday. In June, after Trump called for Russian Federation to be readmitted to the G7 (after being booted over Crimea), Obama national security adviser Susan Rice called Trump's comments "very destructive".

May also appeared annoyed by the question.

Calling her a "tremendous woman", Trump said "she has really never made a mistake".

Trump even asserted that Johnson, a former mayor of London, "would be a great prime minister".

Washington also wanted Russian Federation to spell out guarantees in the statement - or a separate document - that Russian Federation would not interfere in future U.S. elections, Kommersant said.

'Iran, Russia need to bolster ties in face of United States hegemony'
Velayati further quoted Putin as saying that "we don't accept the sanctions imposed by the United States and others against Iran".

"I would have done it much differently", he told The Sun, which urged its readers to back Brexit before a referendum in June 2016.

Britain's exit from the European Union, which was approved in a 2016 referendum, has been a complicated divorce and the United Kingdom has opted for a "soft Brexit" that includes maintaining some ties to the EU.

"I would actually say she probably went the opposite way", Trump said.

"I think he's a great representative for your country", he said. "I was very surprised and saddened that he was getting out of government". "I think they agree with me on immigration", he told reporters in Brussels.

"He's been very nice to me the times I've met him".

"I don't think you'll have any 'Gee, I did it, I did it, you got me.' There won't be a Perry Mason here", Trump said at a press conference on Friday in Britain.

Al Jazeera's Lee described Trump's interview as "absolutely incendiary".

The President's remarks to The Sun materially damaged her biggest project on the eve of his visit, and he had gone out of his way to praise her political rival who had quit in protest at her Brexit plans earlier in the week.

"The alliance comes out from the summit strengthened and united, which is important before the meeting of Trump and (Vladimir) Putin", Landovsky said.

This article was updated to include a comment by a spokesman for The Sun.
