Historic launch towers at Cape Canaveral demolished

A landmark of the space program came tumbling down at Cape Canaveral, Florida on Thursday, July 12. Gen. Wayne Monteith was expected to push a button to begin the demolition of the towers at Launch Complex 17 Thursday morning, according to a report from Florida Today. It toppled over shortly after 7 a.m. It was planned for years while waiting for the funding.

Cape Canaveral has always been a cherished place for the United States space program, having hosting some of the most important space missions stretching back decades.

The last launch from the towers came on September 10, 2011, when United Launch Alliances workhorse Delta II program sent gravity mapping probes to the moon for NASA.

The towers were in service for 60 years. The demolition will make way for Moon Express, a private company that will launch missions to the moon on a regular basis.
