John Isner can't win this epic marathon match at Wimbledon

Isner reaches Wimbledon semi-finals after victory over Raonic Free Nandos for all Kevin Andersons after he beat Roger Federer at Wimbledon

Playing their 10th Wimbledon, Kevin Anderson and John Isner will battle for the place in the final (last year, Marin Cilic reached his first Wimbledon final in the 11th attempt) in what will be one of the most important matches in a career for both players.

Given the reputation both players have for big-serving displays, those in attendance could have been forgiven for anticipating another marathon affair.

With the home court advantage, John defeated Kevin 6-1 7-6 on court 1 (they battled in doubles as well but that match wasn't finished) and his teammates added two more singles wins to wrap up a flawless 4-0 triumph for the Bulldogs who had won the first title since 2001.

The match has surpassed the previous record of 4 hours, 44 minutes when the score was tied 9-9 in the deciding set.

Surprisingly, it wasn't the longest match in Wimbledon history.

He also broke the record for most aces in a Wimbledon tournament.

Not to be outdone, Anderson had 49 aces of his own in the match.

The 32-year-old, the first South African Wimbledon men's finalist since Brian Norton in 1921, faces Novak Djokovic or Rafael Nadal in Sunday's showpiece.

Roanic, the 13th seed, required strapping to his right thigh in the first set and had treatment later in the match, but Isner deserved this victory.

Nadal has 17 major titles, two at the All England Club. Djokovic owns 12 Slam trophies, three from Wimbledon.

Isner was trying to end the longest major title drought - 58 majors - for US men in tennis history. The last American man to win a Grand Slam singles title was Andy Roddick at the 2003 US Open. Isner was representing the university of Georgia, while Anderson was at the university of IL. The victor of the match was guaranteed $1.5 million, depending on the outcome of the final.
