The allegation was part of new charges Rosenstein announced against 12 Russian intelligence officers for hacking offenses during the 2016 presidential election.

A dozen Russian intelligence officers are facing new USA federal indictments alleging they hacked into American computers with the explicit intention of interfering with the 2016 presidential election.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein says that Russian intelligence agents stole information on 500,000 US voters after hacking a state USA election board.

The Russians were accused of hacking into the computer networks of the Democratic National Committee and the presidential campaign of Hillary Clinton.

Trump told reporters in London Friday that he will "absolutely firmly" ask Putin about the finding by USA intelligence agencies that he authorized the campaign of interference. "One of those defendants, and a twelfth Russian officer, are charged with conspiring to infiltrate computers of organizations responsible for administering elections, including state boards of election, secretaries of state, and companies that supply software and other technology used to administer elections".

Rosenstein planned to detail the new charges at a mid-day press conference.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation states to increase defence funding
A frustrated Trump has already hinted he may accept Russia's annexation of Crimea as he accepted Israel's annexation of Jerusalem. Japan, with the world's third-largest economy, spends an even smaller share of its GDP on defense than Germany, 0.9 percent.

The attacks were a signature feature of Russia's active measures against the United States; embarrassing emails were passed to Wikileaks, which released them publicly.

The Russia investigation has now led to charges against 32 people, including previous charges against 14 Russian nationals for their work on spreading Russian-based propaganda.

The No. 2 Justice Department official said Trump, who is traveling in Europe, was briefed on the matter earlier this week.

"There is no allegation in this indictment that any American citizen committed a crime".

In the indictment, which became the latest development in the special counsel investigation headed by former FBI Director Robert Mueller, described the details of the transaction.

The announcement came just before President Donald Trump is set to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki.
