The Rays have immediately suspended their discounted pizza promotion with Papa John's after company founder and chairman John Schnatter acknowledged using a racial slur during a media training exercise in May.

There are not plans to change the pizza chain's name at this point in time, the source told the Associated Press.

Schnatter has always been the face of the brand, appearing in TV ads for Papa John's, and the company has noted in regulatory filings its business could be harmed if Schnatter's reputation was damaged.

His resignations came after Forbes reported that he used the N-word during a May conference call while discussing the national anthem protests in the NFL. Papa John's got a taste of that previous year, when Schnatter stepped down as CEO after blaming disappointing pizza sales on the outcry surrounding football players kneeling during the national anthem.

"On the May call, Schnatter was asked how he would distance himself from racist groups online", a source told Forbes.

Seven explosions in 10 minutes: China chemical plant blast kills 19
A septic tank explosion last November destroyed a wide swathe of a light industrial area in Ningbo, just south of Shanghai. In 2015, a blast in a chemical warehouse in the northern port city of Tianjin left 165 people dead and multiple injured.

The source added that although Schnatter intended for his remarks to show his stance against racism, multiple people found it objectionable.

Schnatter confirmed the allegations in a statement Wednesday and apologized for his use of "inappropriate and hurtful language".

Schnatter, who was a longtime visible presence in Papa John's commercial campaigns, admitted to making a racial slur during a company conference call in May.

Schnatter has always been a controversial character, in large part because of his political viewpoints. However, Schnatter remained the chairman of the company's board.

Papa John's began operations in 1984 and had more than 5,200 locations globally.
