The famous towers of Cape Canaveral Air Force Station Launch Complex 17, which sent hundreds of rockets into space, have come crashing down in a planned demolition which will clear the facility for a private space exploration company. According to Florida Today, the demolition project had a price tag of $2 million. But the demolition of the aging towers doesn't mark the end of Complex 17's use, as spaceflight startup Moon Express is scheduled to take over and begin building its own infrastructure for tests and future launches.

"We have launched some super-exciting missions - Mars missions, all sorts of Global Positioning System missions, missions to all sorts of fun planets - so it is definitely a little emotional for me to see", Scott Messer explained to Florida Today.

A launch pad that dates back to the early days of the space program was demolished.

They found that the Hellas Basin dunes averaged around 250 feet tall, while the Noctis Labyrinthus dunes were about half that. In both cases, it was coming from the north, and slowly pushing the dunes south-different than the winds there today.

It's been almost seven years since the towers were used in a launch, and was used for Delta II and other notable missions, according to the report.

The towers were in service for 60 years.
