Sprint Overhauls Unlimited Plans: What's the Best Deal?

Sprint outlined its new unlimited pricing Sprint outlined its new unlimited pricing

Sprint's current single unlimited plan is becoming two new plans, Unlimited Basic or Unlimited Plus because the word unlimited no longer has any meaning or value.

Then you have Unlimited Plus at $70/month, which does include HD video streaming, a whopping 15 gigs of mobile hotspot access, as well as free access to Hulu, music streaming service Tidal, and 10 gigs of roaming data for Canada and Mexico. However, if you bring in your own devices, you can get the per-line cost down to just $22 per month.

Sprint now joins the other three major American mobile carriers in offering multiple "unlimited" plans, that actually have definable limits. Music and gaming are throttled to 500Kbps and 2Mbps, respectively. Adding a second line costs $50, subsequent lines go for $30/month. The carriers have been increasingly stretching the definition of an unlimited data plan - once a single, simple all-you-can-eat option - into something with a myriad of different adds-ons from hot spot capability to freebies like Hulu or AT&T Watch. "They have different needs". Even T-Mobile, which offers a single T-Mobile One unlimited plan, offers add-ons for HD video streaming and global travel that are essentially different plans. Sprint intends to continue to tailor plans so that customers can get the best choice for them.

It's worth noting that Sprint now has a promotional deal in place that could knock the cost of the Plus plan down substantially. Hulu is included, but not Tidal. If you get five lines, it's $42 per month, per line. In Mexico and Canada, enjoy unlimited talk and text and 10GB of 4G LTE data. Mobile hotspot users will get 15GB of high-speed data connectivity per month.

During times of network congestion, users of either plan will see their data speeds restricted - but only after 50GB of data has been used in a given billing cycle. Veterans, reserve and active service military members can get half off the rate of lines two to five through the Unlimited Military option while 55-and-older customers can get the same service on Unlimited 55+ with two lines costing $70 per month.

Unlimited Military: Designed especially for veterans, active duty and reserves of the US armed forces.

Sprint's new "Unlimited Plus" plan costs $70 per month for one line of service or $180 for four lines of service, though customers can get a $20 per month discount on each line of service if they bring their own phone or buy one outright. Good only on July 13. "Add all of this up and there's literally never been a better time to switch to Sprint", said Draper.
