Fox News trumpets video of Trump trashing CNN as 'fake news'

Steven Clarke | 14 July, 2018, 03:35

President Donald Trump refused to take a question from CNN White House correspondent Jim Acosta during a joint press conference with British Prime Minister Theresa May on Friday, saying that he does not take questions from CNN and that the network is "fake news". Trump responded by saying, "I don't take questions from CNN", and finished with, "CNN is fake news".

Trump took multiple questions from reporters during the press conference in Chequers, U.K., ranging from his upcoming summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki on Monday to his recent interview with The Sun, in which he criticized May and questioned the possibility of a U.S. -U.K. trade deal. The president called out one of my colleagues Kristen Welker of NBC as dishonest and said that NBC New was dishonest. Gold stars all around for that sterling reporting job. Let's go to a real network, ' he said.

"Something happened at the press conference that I think needs addressing".

Roberts then began putting his question to the president through the microphone provided to him as the reporter granted a question by the president.

'Well, we're a real network too, Mr. President, ' he complained.

"For the President to call her dishonest is unfair", Roberts said.

The President's trip to the United Kingdom comes after the annual North Atlantic Treaty Organisation meeting in Brussels, where he demanded allies pay their fair share of the defense burden. Acosta said, referencing an earlier barb from the president.

On social media, some journalists criticized Roberts - a former CNN employee - for not standing up for the network.

"Maybe I'll go first because I didn't criticize the Prime Minister, I have a lot of respect for the Prime Minister and unfortunately there was a story that was done which was generally fine but it didn't put in what I said about the Prime Minister and I said tremendous things", he said. "To issue a blanket condemnation of the network as "fake news" is also unfair".

Trump and Acosta have maintained a tense relationship since Trump took office, with Acosta often taking jabs from the president and his supporters.
