Red-hot Ryan Fox nails tough putt in strong start to Scottish Open

Mickelson posted a level-par 70 on Thursday Mickelson posted a level-par 70 on Thursday

After shooting an opening-round, even-par 70 at the Scottish Open in Gullane, the 48-year-old told a mostly British contingent of reporters that he "had a rough month" and that he is sorry for recent mistakes he has made. He was assessed a two-shot penalty amid criticism that he should have been disqualified for such a willful violation.

Tyrrell Hatton, who began with four birdies in his first eight holes, finished 11 under, two shots back alongside Jens Dantorp - after the Swede bogeyed the 18th.

"I'm sure it could, and I would expect that the European side would try to set it up in a way that they thought was advantageous to them". I made a big mistake [at the US Open] and I wish I could take it back, but I can't. And the reason why this has actually been easier is it was my own fault.

In his most extensive comments since he purposely violated the Rules of Golf at Shinnecock Hills, Mickelson said whatever backlash he receives from players and the public was his own doing.

He further raised eyebrows after the round when he said, "It was meant to take advantage of the rules as best as you can", and, "If somebody's offended by that, I apologize". I have these moments where I'm in a cloud and I'm not really sure what I'm doing, not really aware of the moment. But I had to let that go.

"Not only was I not great on the course - I was not great after the round, either", Mickelson continued. So it was just not a great day, and it was my birthday. It took me a few days to kind of let it go. I do a lot of dumb stuff, right.

He also teased the Hungarian prime minister, Viktor Orban, over his strongman reputation, greeting him jokingly as "dictator". This is not the first time that Juncker has exhibited behaviour that indicates a drink problem.

"It was incredible. I was really excited with my time there because I think I got to see Carnoustie for its greatness, and it's firm and fast, and the bunkers were in play and very hard to avoid". The way I show anger is not the traditionally accepted way of, you know, throwing clubs and berating the fans and marshals. "I tend to be more passive-aggressive in my actions". I hope this was the iffy one.

After completing 72 holes in America on Sunday he took in reconnaissance missions to Paris to play the Ryder Cup course and then to Carnoustie before The Open next week.

Mickelson also revealed that his potential $10m (£7.5m) shootout with Tiger Woods is "close to having some stuff finalised", but that he and Woods would not be putting up the money themselves.

"I love playing links golf and being able to use your imagination and hit different shots", said Fowler, whose victory at Gullane in 2015 prompted the members to rename the clubhouse bar in his honour.

List equalled the course record, with Lee Westwood sharing second place with 2015 victor Rickie Fowler, Robert Rock, Scott Fernandez and Jens Dantorp.
