Trump backtracks on Theresa May criticism, doubles down on immigration's "negative" effects

He threatened to "kill" any trade deal with the United Kingdom if the PM continued with her plan for a soft Brexit, according to an exclusive interview with the Sun.

In his Sun interview, Mr Trump also said former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson - who disagrees with the PM on Brexit and resigned this week - would make a "great prime minister", adding: "I think he's got what it takes".

She said they would discuss "the real opportunities" on a U.S. trade deal, as well as foreign, defence and security issues "where we work really closely together".

She maintained the government's Brexit agreement, which has come under fire from supporters of a "hard Brext" "delivers" on the referendum vote. If Trump said it, it's not clear when or where.

Some lawmakers in her deeply divided Conservative Party have cast May's "business-friendly" Brexit plan as a betrayal that would leave Britain too close to the European Union and warned that she might face a leadership challenge.

May's office said it would not comment on The Sun article during a greeting when Trump met May at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst to review a military exercise. "I would have done it much differently".

He added: "If they go a certain route, I just said that I hope you are going to be able to trade with the United States".

Towering over the queen, Mr Trump and the monarch shared a few interactions as they reviewed troops at the royal castle in Windsor.

However, he later said Ms May was doing a "fantastic job". "As he said in his interview with The Sun she is a very good person and he never said anything bad about her", Sanders said.

It was one of the more than 100 demonstrations planned across the country during his four-day stay. "I don't think we see it as rude".

Speaking at an impromptu press conference after a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels Trump said the British people shared his concerns on immigration, claiming "that's why Brexit happened".

Late a year ago, May herself criticized Trump for retweeting a message by a member of a British far-right group, and the speaker of parliament has said the president would not be welcome to address the chamber.

The White House's official Twitter account, which has over 17million followers, said Donald Trump was "departing from the UK" ahead of his trip to Scotland, which to the amusement of millions of Twitter followers, is still in the UK.

By Friday afternoon, Mr. Trump appeared to backtrack, saying he'd had an opportunity to learn more about Ms.

"I would much rather have her as my friend than my enemy, that I can tell you", he told reporters during a news conference with Ms. "I love the United States but I love getting along with Russian Federation and China and other countries".
