John Brennan, who served as Central Intelligence Agency director between 2013 and January 2017, called the president's comments "treasonous".

The second glimpse of Trump and Putin came more than two hours after the first - when the press left, the leaders began a lengthy one-on-one meeting that would last roughly 40 minutes more than planned. Not only were Trump's comments imbecilic, he is wholly in the pocket of Putin. Republican patriots: "Where are you?"

CIA Director John Brennan.

Speaking on Monday, President Putin offered to allow USA investigators to visit Russian Federation to question the officers. "It was fantastic and very, very disturbing".

"In some of the strongest words yet reflecting the unease of Washington's traditional allies, Germany's foreign minister said on Monday that Europe could no longer rely on the United States". "He has got to be celebrating on the way home to Moscow".

Those were the first moments of Mr Putin's arrival for his much-anticipated summit meeting with his American counterpart Donald Trump on Monday (July 16) - and they underscored his honed ability to maximise the power of the image and the drama of high-profile, made-for-TV political events.

Many in Washington were agog at Trump's decision to sit alone with Putin, anxious about what he might bargain away to the former KGB spymaster, after previously cosying up to the autocratic leaders of China and North Korea.

"They said they think it's Russia; I have President Putin, he just said it's not Russia", Trump told reporters with Putin by his side.

Some at Fox seized on tweeted criticism by former Central Intelligence Agency director John Brennan, who said Trump's performance was near treasonous.

"No prior president has ever abased himself more abjectly before a tyrant".

And, Trump once again seemed to doubt the USA intelligence community's assessment that Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 election.

"He was just saying that everything they put out was actual information", said Wallace. Ryan said Russian Federation "remains hostile to our most basic values and ideals".

Some career diplomats also expressed alarm.

Trump is on the last leg of his latest European trip, which took him first to Brussels for a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit and then to the United Kingdom for a working visit. The posters, which are in Russian and English, went up ahead of today's meeting between Trump and Putin in Helsinki.

President Trump said Mr Putin had been "extremely strong and powerful in his denial" of any election meddling.

"We have discussions on everything from trade to military, to missiles, to nuclear, to China", President Trump said before going into the private meeting in Helsinki, Finland.

At the joint appearance in Finland with Putin, Trump repeated the Russian leader's denials about involvement in the election.

"I don't want to insult President Trump when I say this - and I may come as rude - but before he announced that he will run for presidency, he was of no interest for us". "I don't see any reason why it would be", said the US president.

Democrats also sounded alarm. He told CBS News that he didn't "expect anything" from Mr Putin, while his national security adviser said the USA wasn't looking for any "concrete deliverables". "Between draconian laws and website blocking, the pressure on independent media has grown steadily since Vladimir Putin's return to the Kremlin in 2012", the group says. Mr Trump had previously criticised the pipeline. I thought it was an absolute disgrace, "said the President".
