Mr Unsworth's unrivaled knowledge of the caves was key to the safe rescue.

Following severe criticism, Tesla investors demanded an apology from Musk for making derogatory and hurtful comments about Unsworth, who played an instrumental role in rescuing the children from the Thailand cave. His offer was politely rejected. "Sorry pedo guy, you really did ask for it".

"I apologise to Mr Unsworth and to the companies I represent as leader".

Musk shot back in a series of now-deleted tweets that complimented the Thai Navy SEALs, but crushed Unsworth, where he questioned water levels in the cave and whether or not "you could literally have swum there".

Separately, Mr Musk attacked the Thai official in charge of the command centre, Narongsak Osotthanakorn, for saying the mini-sub had been "not practical", though "technologically sophisticated". "I haven't decided what to do next yet", Vern Unsworth told Reuters in Mae Sai town in Chiang Rai province, about 3 km (2 miles) from the cave where the boys and their coach were trapped for 18 days.

Mr Unsworth, 63, said he was considering taking legal action against the billionaire after Musk made an unfounded allegation that he was a paedophile because the British ex-pat lived in Thailand.

Dr Zeynep Tufekci, a tech expert, wrote how Mr Musk became frustrated when rescue crews said his contraption was impractical for the task at hand.

Cut off from the outside world, they were not found by divers until 2 July and a complex rescue operation ensued, during which one diver lost his life. During the interview, the diver railed against Musk and his submarine.

Media captionRockets, cars and flame throwers: Who is Elon Musk? The apology comes after lawyers explained that the tweet could land the CEO of Tesla (TSLA), SpaceX, and Neuralink in some legal trouble. Since last month, the company's stock has gone down more than 16 percent.
