Putin summit: President slammed as 'TREASONOUS' after comments about Russian Federation meddling

Steven Clarke | 18 July, 2018, 07:15

Sen. Bob Corker said Trump's comments Monday made the US "look like a pushover".

"My people came to me, Dan Coats came to me and some others", Trump said.

In January 2017, 17 USA intelligence agencies proved Russian Federation interfered with the 2016 presidential election.

The news conference also rattled some officials in the State and Defense Departments and in USA intelligence agencies, according to officials in five government offices.

On Monday in Helsinki, he held the smoking gun: a soccer ball passed by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"I think it was great today, but I think it was really bad five hours ago".

"I thought we were doing horribly before today", the president said.

Trump's failure to back up claims from USA intelligence agencies came as he met President Putin in Helsinki.

"It was truly horrifying and deeply alarming to see the President of the United States stand with the President of Russian Federation in undercutting the work of our intelligence agencies and law enforcement and blaming America for the attacks on our elections and our democracy", she said in news release.

Was it the USA provocatively moving North Atlantic Treaty Organisation into Russia's front yard after the collapse of the USSR?

The White House has struggled to explain why Trump aligned so closely with Putin, and lawmakers in both major parties appeared shocked and dismayed with his suggestion that he believes Putin's denial of interfering in the 2016 elections.

Pretending the very idea bunched his undies, Putin huffed, "Well, the first point I'm about to make is - why did we take - talk about like this, polite people?"

Rep. Darrell Issa of California said he takes the charges filed by Mueller's team seriously but questions the timing coming days before the Trump-Putin meeting.

He later went on to say that before the meeting, the U.S. relationship with Russian Federation was a "potential problem".

The Russian foreign ministry responded by liking Trump's tweet and then replying, "We agree".

Former CIA director John Brennan said Mr Trump's news conference "was nothing short of treasonous".

"I think you see for yourself that these efforts failed".

"When he had the opportunity to defend our intelligence agencies who work for him, I was very disappointed and saddened with the equivalency that he gave between them and what Putin was saying".

"I beat Hillary Clinton easily and frankly we beat her. we won that race and it's a shame that there can be even a little bit of a cloud over it", he said. We need to continue to deal with Russian Federation from a position of strength. Without touching the document, Putin asked the anchor to leave it on the side of the table. Some Republicans in Congress were more tepid - Thom Tillis and Richard Burr focused their criticism on Russian Federation and not Trump in statements late Monday.

"The ball is in your court now", Putin said, in a mixed metaphor via a translator, noting that the US will host the World Cup in 2026, after Russia's turn as host wrapped on Sunday.

We are not going to let Putin's annexation of Crimea or aid to pro-Russian rebels in Ukraine prevent us from working on a rapprochement and a partnership with him, Trump is saying.

Asked about the indictments, Putin suggested that Moscow and Washington could jointly conduct the investigation, inviting special counsel Robert Mueller's investigators to come to Russian Federation to interview the 12 people - an idea Trump hailed as an "incredible offer".

The summit capped a trip overseas during which Trump accused North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies of failing to spend enough on their militaries and embarrassed British Prime Minister Theresa May by saying she refused to take his advice about how to negotiate Britain's exit from the EU.
