British Open: Erik Van Rooyen Holes Putt After Ball-Marker Ruling

Sidney Guerrero | 20 July, 2018, 22:23

The luck of the draw does sometimes matter in golf - especially at the British Open - and Woods got the worst part with an afternoon tee time for his first round, and a morning time for Friday when rain is forecast.

One shot behind was a collection of players with little history in golf's biggest events, including Erik Van Rooyen and Zander Lombard of South Africa. The 31 players who managed to break par were separated by just four shots.

But not necessarily at the British Open.

The world No.10 was second at last month's US Open at a slick Shinnecock Hills, finishing with a major record-equaling 63, but he would love nothing more than a Claret Jug to open his major account.

In Woods' prime, he was so much better than the field on average that he usually built a comfortable lead at a major early on, and no one in the world had the ability to overtake him on a Sunday.

Fleetwood is still chasing his first major title, but the fast-rising Englishman, who had to borrow an umbrella Friday as he doesn't have an equipment sponsor and didn't bring his own, set the soggy course alight with a 65.

"It was a test, but I have to say the fairways were a lot easier to hit today", Woods said.

"I'm just playing to my spots, " he said.

"If I can keep it in the fairway, I feel like I can control my golf ball around the green", Kisner said, according to the Associated Press.

Last year's Open victor, Jordan Spieth, is a top contender while the other usual suspects like Dustin Johnson, Justin Rose, Rickie Fowler and Rory McIlroy sit atop the list of favorites as well.

McIlroy told the media that playing aggressive can be a high-risk, high-reward strategy for him at Carnoustie, but it's one worth pursuing. "So, yeah, I think it's important".

"I'm convinced that that's the way that I should play it".

Round one of the 2018 Open Championship is in the books and it was a good one. And he slid a birdie putt on 18 just past the hole, another unforced error that will sit with him overnight. But he had another poor finish, closing bogey-double bogey for a 72 and is at 6-over 148 for 36 holes.

Woods was two-under on the front nine, but struggled slightly on the back, dropping two strokes.

There are five Scottish golfers in The Open field and amateur Sam Locke has the lowest score after Thursday at 1-over.

He never quite found his groove in the first round, going bogey/birdie/bogey/birdie/bogey on the 5th through 9th holes, then birdie/bogey/birdie/bogey/bogey on holes No. 12 through No. 16.

The other Scottish golfers at The Open include Russell Knox (+2), Sandy Lyle (+4), Scott Jamieson (+4) and Grant Forrest (+9).
