YouTuber Dave Lee posted avideo showing the scale of the performance issue affecting his Core i9-equipped 15-inch 2018 MacBook Pro. Until now, this chip has been in danger of overheating when running continuously, so it slows itself down to prevent damage.

"It's a bug, and it's something that should be addressed, but it's not going to be a widespread problem" because it didn't affect Apple's more affordable mainstream laptops, Greengart says.

According to Apple, its new MacBook Pros were incorrectly limiting clock speeds when under heavy thermal loads, something that had been repeated in numerous occasions on social media.

Testing carried out by new owners indicated that Apple's new laptop suffered from serious performance throttling under load as a result of overheating.

Apple is not the only PC manufacturer that has dealt with recalls and thermal throttling issues, but its recent stumbles are particularly noteworthy because this is the first time it has offered the MacBook Pro with a Core i9 processor.

But just now, Apple has issued a statement to multiple media outlets, apologizing for the issue, which was related to a "missing digital key in the firmware that impacts the thermal management system", in these latest 2018 MacBook Pro models.

Apple said that a software update, macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 Supplemental Update, will be available for download today from the Mac App Store to correct the problem.

Apple apologized "to any customer who has experienced less than optimal performance on their new systems". "Barring major revelations that this was done on objective or something, I find it hard to believe that this will have a major impact on Apple's brand or MacBook Pro sales". That includes both the 13-inch and the 15-inch versions.

The refreshed MacBook Pro was announced 12 days ago, which included new Intel CPUs and a redesigned keyboard. If Apple designed the notebook's chassis - and its cooling system - with lower-heat chips in mind, but which have yet to be launched, that might explain why temperature has become such an issue. If that turned you off to the laptop, there's some good news today: Apple says the throttling was due to a software bug that has since been fixed.
