A Sputnik-era dream: NASA spacecraft hurtles toward sun

The Delta IV rocket carrying the Parker Solar Probe lifts off from launch complex 37 at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral on Sunday A Sputnik-era dream: NASA spacecraft hurtles toward sun

NASA used ULA's Delta IV Heavy rocket to launch the space probe out of the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida this weekend, marking the companies 37th launch of the Delta IV rocket and the 129th successful launch since the company was formed in 2006.

"The Parker Solar Probe will help us do a much better job of predicting when a disturbance in the solar wind could hit Earth", said Justin Kasper, a project scientist and professor at the University of MI.

As Parker and thousands of others watched, a Delta IV Heavy rocket carried the probe aloft, thundering into the clear, star-studded sky on three pillars of fire that lit up the middle-of-the-night darkness.

A Solar Probe Cup created to measure and assess the solar wind will not be behind the shield, but it is made of titanium-zirconium-molybdenum with a melting point of about 4,260 Fahrenheit.

Taken together, the Parker probe - which will also become the fastest man-made object travelling around the Sun at speeds of up to 6,90,000 kmph - represents a giant leap in space science.

"I have learnt a very important lesson of my professional scientific career from him: to be generous to the ideas of others, as long as they are not obviously wrong, and even if they contradict my own personal views", he said. But Sunday gave way to complete success.

The mission is targeted to last seven years, and make 24 orbits of the star, eventually approaching within just 3.8 million miles of the Sun's surface at its closest transit.

City do, however, have David Silva, Bernardo Silva and Gundogan who can offset his loss in midfield. De Bruyne, 27, is expected to fly to Barcelona for further tests with specialist Dr.

The spacecraft is the only NASA probe in history to be named after a living person - 91-year-old solar physicist Eugene Parker, who first described the solar wind in 1958. It was the first time NASA named a spacecraft after someone still alive.

"The Parker Solar Probe is going to be the first piece of human engineering to get that close to the sun".

Parker also theorised an explanation for the superheated solar atmosphere, the corona, which is - contrary to what was expected by physics laws - hotter than the surface of the Sun itself.

Two decades later, just around the time NASA was abuzz with its historic mission to touch the Sun - Parker Solar Probe, Gizmodo.com asked scientists: "Why is 'Walkin' on the Sun' actually pretty timely right now, scientifically speaking?" We've studied it from missions that are close in, even as close as the planet Mercury.

The real challenge while orbiting this close to the Sun is to keep the spacecraft from burning up. As the spacecraft moves, the sensors of the spacecraft will direct the 2.3 meters-wide, 11.4 centimeters-thick heat protection shield to face the Sun at all times thereby maintaining a cool temperature of 29 degrees celsius inside.
