U.S. Charge d'Affaires Jeffrey Hovenier talks to members of the media after visiting United States pastor Andrew Brunson, who is being held under house arrest in Izmir, Turkey, Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2018.

The 2nd Penal Court in İzmir rejected the appeal on August 15 and sent the defendant's petition to a higher court.

Andrew Brunson has been at the heart of the ongoing fight after the USA sanctioned two top Turkish officials for his continued detention, and Turkey's vow to retaliate, even as its currency plummets.

Trump, who has called Brunson's detention a "total disgrace", last Friday doubled tariffs on Turkish steel and aluminum exports in order to increase pressure on Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan speaks during a news conference Tuesday at the presidential palace in Ankara.

Brunson's Evangelical Presbyterian Church describes him as a "teaching elder" who moved to Turkey in 1993 as part of a missionary programme.

Turkey and the United States are now experiencing rocky relations following Washington's imposition of sanctions on Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu and Justice Minister Abdulhamit Gul for not releasing Brunson.

Turkey on Wednesday intensified its clash with the United States, announcing heavy new tariffs on some American products including cars, alcohol and tobacco.

On Sunday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he would like to form "a new alliance" with China, Iran and Russian Federation to resist economic pressures imposed by the Donald Trump administration.

Turkey's ambassador to Washington Serdar Kilic on Monday held talks with US National Security Advisor John Bolton in a meeting that Cavusoglu said was arranged by the White House.

Turkey has also been publicly critical of criminal prosecutions in the US involving state-run Halkbank official Mehmet Hakan Atilla, as well as Reza Zarrab, a Turkish-Iranian gold trader.

Qatar pledged $15 billion of investment in Turkey that will be channeled into Turkish financial markets and banks, a government source told Reuters on Wednesday.

The lira rebounded some 8 per cent on Tuesday, helped by news of a planned conference call on Thursday in which the finance minister will seek to reassure worldwide investors.

Speaking in ideal Turkish, Brunson told the court he "forgives" those who provided testimony accusing him of links with the PKK and Gulen's group.

Tillis has visited Brunson twice in Turkey and takes to the Senate floor every week to remind his countrymen of Brunson's plight.

In a tweet on July 26, Trump called Brunson a "great Christian, family man and wonderful human being" and said he "should be released immediately".

CNN's Isil Sariyuce reported from Istanbul and Laura Smith-Spark wrote from London.
