The president's remarks seemed to contradict the announcement the White House made hours earlier, when press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Brennan's frequent criticism of Trump - which she described as "erratic conduct and behavior" and "frenzied commentary" - is what prompted the revocation.

According to Politico, the Trump administration announced the decision Wednesday afternoon, saying there was simply "no justification" for Brennan to retain access to classified information and top secret material.

In 2014, as the Senate Intelligence Committee was compiling a lengthy report into the CIA's use of "enhanced interrogation techniques" at its secret prisons, chair Dianne Feinstein (D-California) accused Brennan's agency of secretly monitoring the committee's computers and removing sensitive documents.

The memo that details Trump's decision to yank Brennan's credentials was released Wednesday, but was originally dated July 26 - 3 days after Paul met with Trump.

"As part of this review, I am evaluating action with respect to the following individuals: James Clapper, James Comey, Michael Hayden, Sally Yates, Susan Rice, Andrew McCabe, Peter Strzok, Lisa Page, and Bruce Ohr", Sanders read.

Rep. Nancy Pelosi, the House Democratic leader, said Trump's move was a "stunning abuse of power".

The Department of Justice is investigating whether the Trump campaign had an improper relationship with Russian Federation, an effort led by special counsel and former FBI Director Robert Mueller.

McLaughlin said it is critical for intelligence professional, especially those still in their jobs, to be able to deliver unpleasant news to a president, and he expressed hope that Trump's action does not have a chilling effect on those who brief the president.

This week, Brennan sharply rebuked Trump for referring to Omarosa Manigault Newman, the president's former, as "that dog".

Trump then pointed to other investigators who worked on the Russian Federation probe and the investigation of Hillary Clinton's private email server.

At least two of the former officials, Comey and McCabe, do not now have security clearances.

"Normally ex-high officials, as a courtesy their clearances are kept active", Rostow said.

"I have also begun to review the more general question of the access to classified information by government officials".

He continued: "So I think it's something that had to be done".

Special Counsel Robert Mueller is looking into Russia's alleged efforts to interfere in the 2016 United States election, and whether there was any collusion between the Kremlin and Mr Trump's campaign.

So, unlike his predecessors, most of whom also left under a dark cloud, Brennan is bereft of anyone to protect him.
