Elway on if Broncos would sign Kaepernick: ‘Colin had his chance’

Broncos’ John Elway says he might still seek a veteran backup QB Chad Kelly bumped up to No. 2 quarterback in Denver

Denver has a big hole on its quarterback depth chart, with 2016 first-round pick Paxton Lynch recently getting demoted to third-string.

John Elway, the general manager for the Denver Broncos, revealed Thursday that the team once gave embattled former National Football League quarterback Colin Kaepernick a "chance" to be on the team, but he turned them down.

When asked, Elway said, "I still feel like we have time" to figure out the team's backup spot.

Aretha Franklin, a "giant among giants", remembered by friend Sam Moore
Franklin, who received a Kennedy Center honor in 1994, was the first woman to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, in 1987.

"I'm not going to tell you we're definitely going to stand pat, but I'm not telling you we're going (in) that direction, either", Elway said, according to Arnie Stapleton of The Associated Press. The contract was offered before Kaepernick started protesting. He didn't take it. "As I said in my deposition. he had his chance to be here, he passed it".

In 2016, the Broncos had a lot of interest in Kaepernick and tried to work out a trade with the San Francisco 49ers to get him.

As Ian Rapoport of NFL Media notes, Kaepernick was seeking a guaranteed salary when the Broncos were interested in trading for him two offseasons ago. Had he agreed to the deal, he would have walked away from $12.4 million in base salary and as much as $16.2 million over those two years. Instead, Kaepernick was cut and hasn't been in the league since, and the Broncos are still trying to figure out their quarterback situation, at least in terms of who will be the backup with the addition of Case Keenum as the unquestioned starter.
