China's Dalian Sun Moon Star International Logistics Trading Company, its Singapore-based affiliate SINSMS and Profinet, a Russian company, as well as its director general were targets of the fresh sanctions.

The illicit cigarette trade in North Korea reportedly nets over $1 billion for the regime each year.

The US Treasury also sanctioned a Chinese firm and its Singapore-based affiliate for selling alcohol and tobacco to North Korea in breach of US sanctions aimed at pressuring Pyongyang to end its nuclear programs.

The actions banned exports of North Korean raw commodities and capped the regime's imports of oil in a bid to stop the flow of revenue and resources needed to develop the nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs. Any property or interests in property of the designated entities that's possessed or controlled by an American, or is within the United States, are blocked.

Meanwhile, Russia's Profinet Pte is accused of harbouring North Korean ships by providing port services as many as six times, which also included those vessels slapped with USA sanctions for importing oil illegally.

China has repeatedly said it fully and strictly enforces United Nations resolutions on North Korea, but that it also has a right to conduct what it calls "normal trade" with the country in areas outside the scope of the sanctions.

When asked for comment, Liang Ye, a legal representative of Dalian Sun Moon Star International Logistics Trading, said the matter was still unclear and that the Chinese company had not received any notification.

China has also been angered by unilateral USA sanctions on Chinese firms and individuals.

Anchor: The United States on Wednesday sanctioned three Chinese and Russian companies it accuses of helping North Korea with illicit trade in breach of global sanctions against the regime.

Ryabkov said a decision on a response would be taken by the country's leadership.

It said the Russian firm and its director provided port services at least six times to North Korean-flagged vessels engaged in illicit oil shipments.

Kolchanov told Reuters the sanctions against him and his firm were illegal, and said he only helped prepare documents for the North Korean vessels.
