"We don't always list every single thing, every single item" in the Secretary's calls with foreign officials, she said when asked why neither the strike nor a probe were mentioned in the official State Department readout.

The Gulf Arab states are leading the alliance of Sunni Muslim countries that intervened in Yemen's war in 2015 to try to restore the internationally recognized government that was expelled from the capital Sanaa by the Houthis in 2014.

The coalition has promised an internal inquiry but analysts and aid groups have voiced doubt it is ready to provide the transparency and accountability demanded by the wider worldwide community.

The high civilian death toll has been an embarrassment for Washington and other Western governments which supply the coalition with warplanes and other weapons.

The war in impoverished Yemen has left almost 10,000 people dead and unleashed what the United Nations describes as the world's worst humanitarian crisis. The coalition denied responsibility.

Coalition forces quickly retook Aden and smaller coastal towns, but since then neither side has made much progress in the war, widely seen as a proxy conflict between Saudi Arabia and Iran. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) called on Gen. Joseph Votel-the top commander of US forces in the Middle East-to explain the USA military's role in the Saudi-led coalition's bombings of Yemeni civilians.

The Saudi-led coalition however described the attack as "legitimate", with coalition spokesman Turki al-Malki even claiming that the strikes "conformed to global and humanitarian laws".

But as photographs of dazed and bloodied children flooding into hospitals were beamed around the world, it was forced to concede to an investigation.

Some 16,000 Yemenis have been killed and thousands more injured since the onset of the Sauid-led aggression on Yemen in March 2015.

But they too resisted independent investigations into the circumstances of major errors.

In a new toll on Tuesday, the ICRC said that 56 children were also among the 79 people wounded in Thursday's strike on Sa'ada Province, one of the deadliest attacks on civilians in the three-year-old Saudi-led war.
