There were no casualties and all 157 passengers and eight crew aboard the Boeing 737-800 were unharmed, according to airport authorities and Xiamen Air. All others aboard Xiamen Air Flight 8667 were unhurt.

A Xiamen Airlines jet has crashed while landing at Manila's Ninoy Aquino International Airport, CGTN reported.

Ninoy Aquino International Airport, Manila's main international gateway, will be closed most of Friday while emergency crews remove excess fuel then try to lift the aircraft, its belly resting on the muddy ground, away from the main runway, which was being cleared of debris, officials said.

Monreal said the airport was not able to extract the content of the flight recorder, which would be sent to Singapore for investigation.

"We have no reports yet of injuries but the passengers were all drenched", said Eric Apolonio, a spokesman of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines.

Local television network ABS-CBN later aired photos of a group it said were passengers from the flight wrapped in blankets as they lined up inside the passenger terminal.

Storm Ernesto is now moving east across the ocean and is expected to become a post-tropical cyclone by later today or tomorrow. We can expect heavy downpours and lots of humidity. 'Ex-Ernesto will then merge with an Atlantic low pressure system.

The plane circled before landing on its second attempt, but then lost contact with the airport tower, Sydiongco said.

The plane had circled Manila for about an hour before landing during a heavy storm.

Investigators retrieved the plane's flight recorder and will get the cockpit voice recorder to determine the cause of the accident, he said.

The incident forced a partial shutdown of the Philippines' main airport Friday.

The airport's worldwide runway was expected to be closed until about noon Friday (local time) and airlines were notified of the closure, officials said.

The runway for smaller aircraft remained open, but the authorities said the accident has delayed thousands of passengers, including holidaymakers travelling ahead of a long weekend.
