U.S. to impose ‘severe’ sanctions on Russian Federation over spy poisoning

The men, Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov, told the Kremlin-financed network Russia Today that they had traveled from Moscow to the English provincial city of Salisbury in March to visit its ancient cathedral, not to assassinate Sergei Skripal, a former double agent who sold secrets to Britain.

The men said they're partners in a business importing sports-nutrition supplements from Europe.

The interview prompted scorn and mockery in Britain.

The City Stay Hotel, where Russian suspects Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov stayed, is pictured in Bow, east London, on September 5, 2018.

"The last time Russian military claimed to be on holiday was when they invaded Ukraine in 2014", Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt tweeted.

Failure to show the men on TV "would have raised suspicions these people were no longer among the living", said Valery Solovei, a political scientist at the Moscow State Institute for International Relations.

Detectives believe it is likely the two Salisbury suspects, thought to be aged around 40, travelled under aliases and that Petrov and Boshirov are not their real names.

They told state-controlled outlet RT News that they were in Salisbury, where Skripal and his daughter were poisoned, because their friends had recommended its "famous cathedral".

"The maskirovka script writer must have had writer's block", said Philip Ingram, a former British military intelligence officer.

The newspaper Vedomosti headlined its report on the broadcast: "An interview, but no information". Entrepreneurs in this industry usually advertise their services far and wide, including via an extensive social media presence.

"From Heathrow Airport, they returned to Moscow on Aeroflot flight SU2585, departing at 10.30pm on Sunday, 4 March".

"The Spy Who Went Home Because It Was Cold", another wrote.

When asked if British investigators could visit Russian Federation to question Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov, whom London suspects of being involved in the Salisbury incident, Peskov said that there was a legal assistance mechanism based on bilateral agreements and worldwide law.

But instead of heading in the direction of the cathedral, they went the other way and were captured 10 minutes later near a Shell petrol garage on Wilton Road.

They say the goal of the men's visit to Salisbury on 3 March was reconnaissance, and on 4 March they returned to apply Novichok to the Skripals' front door.

The interview was conducted by Margarita Simonyan, editor-in-chief of RT and the Kremlin's top propagandist. "You spent time together, you lived together, you went for a walk together". "Maybe we did [approach] Skripal's house, but we don't know where is it located".

"Don't you think that it's kind of stupid for two straight men to carry perfume for ladies?"

The interview was evidence of "the professional degradation" of the intelligence service "multiplied by the exhaustion of propaganda resources", he said.

A spokesman for British Prime Minister Theresa May rejected Putin's statement.

A British couple, Dawn Sturgess and Charlie Rowley, came into contact with the same nerve agent in a town near Salisbury months later.

Police officers at the scene.

British investigators say the poison was transported in a fake Nina Ricci perfume bottle and sprayed onto the handle of Skripal's door.
