Friendship, Competition and Respect: A Story of Sue Bird and the Mystics

For a game featuring teams from Seattle and Washington D.C., Hartford-New Haven had the second highest viewership for markets watching the championship behind only Seattle-Tacoma, according to ESPN.

To win the first championship in franchise history, the third-seeded Mystics must win three straight games, something no WNBA team has done in the best-of-five Finals.

"It doesn't feel real yet, honestly", WNBA Finals MVP Breanna Stewart said after the game. Our team went through a rebuild and yes, I chose to stay.

The Seattle Storm beat the Washington Mystics 98-82 to claim their 3rd national championship. Yet less than a minute later, the Storm had the lead back to 15 points, completely shutting the Mystics down. Rookie Ariel Atkins has been a steady offensive force for the Mystics, averaging 19 points per game in the series, but they will need a lot more from the remaining starting five.

"Early in series I thought we gave her too much room and then as we got into some of these games we tried to show her different looks", Thibault said. From there, it was smooth sailing to the 16-point win.

Bird was a linchpin in 2004, when the Storm took their first title, and a stalwart in 2010, when they won again.

"I can't speak for everybody in here, but certainly I wanted to win for Sue every single day", backup guard Sami Whitcomb said.

Klopp bemused by Neville's Champions League advice
"I just felt Liverpool wanted to come to an agreement quickly", he told the Telegraph . But for now, early on in this campaign, Liverpool seems up for the challenge.

"You just never know when you're going to be back - you're going to make me cry - and I didn't think I'd be back, " Bird said.

Things didn't slow down for Stewart and Howard after their big first half. Though the floor of the arena, the home gym of George Mason University, boasts the imported red, white and blue signage of the Mystics, the 10,000 seats surrounding the court alternate from green to yellow - Storm-like colors. She finished with 31 points and 14 rebounds, both team highs. Their combined 59 points alone accounted for more than 61 percent of the Storms' points. Team captain Sue Bird added 10 points and 10 assists.

Seattle guard Jewell Loyd had just six points on 2-for-11 shooting, but it didn't hurt the Storm. Seattle ended up losing that game by 2 points, and in an essay for The Players' Tribune Bird said that she was proud of the team because they proved they could do it without her - something she's been pushing them to realize all season.

The sharpshooter, who played three seasons with the Perth Lynx, averaged 6.0 points per game throughout the three Finals games, playing a key role off the bench.

So after Bird had to face her longtime friend Diana Taurasi in the semifinals with a Finals berth on the line, she is now facing another good friend in Toliver for the WNBA championship.

Before the Storm selected Stewart with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 draft, the 6-4 forward arrived with the incredible hype befitting the only player to win four NCAA tournament titles and four Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four awards.

Voting for the All-WNBA First and Second Teams was conducted at the conclusion of the regular season.
