Now, the company has confirmed that it will launch a new foldable smartphone within a year. The company is expected to unveil the device by the end of this year.

The remarks also come just weeks after DJ Koh, head of mobile at Samsung, said it was "time to deliver" on a foldable smartphone, fuelling speculation that the device could debut at the firm's developer conference in November.

Chinese smartphone maker Huawei recently launched the world's first 7nm processor and now it seems that the company is planning to launch foldable smartphone within a year.

Now, company CEO, Richard Yu has gone on record to say that their foldable smartphones will make laptops obsolete.

"Why are you still using a computer?"

"The industry is very close now to foldable phones becoming a commercial reality", Stanton said, according to the BBC.

Huawei, as we all know is working on its version of a foldable smartphone.

"We will change that", he reportedly said. "It is conceivable that you fold out a display".

Richard Yu confirmed to Die Welt that Huawei was "already working on it".

The comments suggest close competition between Huawei and Samsung, both of which are aiming to become the first smartphone maker to release a device with a flexible display of some kind.

Though rumors and reports about foldable phones have always been circulating, the race to develop the first foldable phone effectively started when Samsung claimed in July that it had developed an unbreakable, bendable screen which has cleared safety testing in the U.S.
