Trump took to social media, claiming "3,000 people did not die" as a result of the storm and denouncing Democrats for inflating the death toll to hurt him.

Trump has particularly been irritated by video footage of him throwing rolls of paper towels to a crowd of relief workers on the island, according to a Washington Post report published Thursday.

They had these attractive, soft towels. And they were screaming and they were loving everything. "We have a moral obligation to do better, not only to finish the job in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, but to prevent the same type of inadequate response from ever happening again".

"The next day they said, 'Oh, it was so disrespectful to the people, '" he added.

Public health experts have estimated that almost 3,000 perished because of the effects of Hurricane Maria. He suggested speciously that George Washington University - whose researchers analyzed mortality data in Puerto Rico in order to determine how many people died during the hurricane and its aftermath - created the numbers "like magic" through an unprecedented and unproven method.

Trump maintained as recently as Tuesday that his response to the storm was an "incredible unsung success".

She said she visited Puerto Rico herself a few months ago and people were dying all around from the lack of resources.

With Hurricane Florence rolling in, FEMA Administrator Brock Long was close to getting fired-and still could be, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Since the hurricane struck in September past year, several investigations by academics and journalists suggested the death toll was much higher than the official count, which for months stayed at 64.

"If a person died for any reason, like old age, just add them on to the list", he tweeted. Then, like magic, "3000 PEOPLE KILLED".

A month after the hurricanes, in October of previous year, Congress approved at $36.5 billion disaster relief package, which included money for Puerto Rico.

Michael Avenatti, the attorney representing Stormy Daniels in her lawsuits against Trump and his former personal lawyer Michael Cohen, appeared on Carlson's Fox News show Thursday night, and before he even said a word, the chyron on the screen described Avenatti as a "creepy porn lawyer".

The team, which worked independently of the Puerto Rican government, looked at death certificates, spoke to funeral home directors and interviewed doctors, health officials, hospital directors and forensic pathologists to reach their conclusion.
