Trump took to social media, claiming "3,000 people did not die" as a result of the storm and denouncing Democrats for inflating the death toll to hurt him.

Trump has particularly been irritated by video footage of him throwing rolls of paper towels to a crowd of relief workers on the island, according to a Washington Post report published Thursday.

They had these attractive, soft towels. And they were screaming and they were loving everything. "We have a moral obligation to do better, not only to finish the job in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, but to prevent the same type of inadequate response from ever happening again".

"The next day they said, 'Oh, it was so disrespectful to the people, '" he added.

Public health experts have estimated that almost 3,000 perished because of the effects of Hurricane Maria. He suggested speciously that George Washington University - whose researchers analyzed mortality data in Puerto Rico in order to determine how many people died during the hurricane and its aftermath - created the numbers "like magic" through an unprecedented and unproven method.

Trump maintained as recently as Tuesday that his response to the storm was an "incredible unsung success".

She said she visited Puerto Rico herself a few months ago and people were dying all around from the lack of resources.
