Seattle Storm will not visit White House even if invited

Seattle Storm Sue Bird Seattle Storm will not visit White House even if invited
Sidney Guerrero | 19 September, 2018, 07:23

"At this point, it doesn't even really need to be discussed", Bird said per ESPN.

Bird, 37, visited the White House with the University of CT after a USA college crown and again to see Barack Obama with the Storm after a 2010 WNBA crown.

Bird is citing what has become a pattern of clashes between basketball programs and President Donald Trump, from the Minnesota Lynx not being invited after their 2017 title to Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors making it clear they would not accept. Trump later rescinded their invitation as well. "It's come up. We paid attention to what happened with Minnesota not getting invited".

The Lynx's non-invite came after Trump withdrew an invitation to Curry and the Golden State Warriors after they won the 2017 National Basketball Association title.

Trump has received visits from the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots, World Series champion Houston Astros, Stanley Cup champions Pittsburgh Penguins and the NCAA football champions Alabama Crimson Tide and Clemson Tigers.

This year, Trump canceled a visit by the Philadelphia Eagles to commemorate their Super Bowl win after most of the players decided they'd skip it.

"There's an excitement about it", Bird said.

Ryan Fitzpatrick rocked the champs - and then rocked DeSean Jacksons bling
Despite his choice of postgame attire , Ryan Fitzpatrick is more NBA Jam than Grand Theft Auto Vice City right now. He's completing an absurd 78 percent of his passes and has produced nine touchdowns, eight through the air.

But then she said, "It's a huge disappointment".

Trump famously withdrew an invitation to NBA champion Golden State previous year after criticism from Stephen Curry while Curry, teammate Kevin Durant and then-Cleveland star LeBron James said even before the NBA Finals ended that the victor wouldn't want to go to the White House. "I remember first walking in to meet President Obama and it's like-just the aura-it's insane", Bird continued. It doesn't feel exciting.

"For what we stand for in Seattle, and what we stand for in the league, I think it's pretty evident that we don't want to go", Jewell Loyd, a shooting guard, said. "It's disappointing, because it was something most athletes looked forward to".

"I think until people see a change, it's probably going to be the norm", Mosqueda-Lewis said.

"It's disappointing in the fact that we don't really want to go and that, because of our beliefs, you don't get to go because that is a part of winning a championship", Mosqueda-Lewis said.

Sports champions have visited the White House for decades, but for the second straight year, the WNBA champion isn't going. Luckily for me, I was able to visit the White House three times when I was in college.
