Widespread damage after tornado hits Ontario and Quebec

Steven Clarke | 23 September, 2018, 23:28

A tornado sparked chaos near the Canadian capital Ottawa on Friday, injuring dozens as homes were damaged, cars flipped over, and over 130,000 people left without power, local media said.

"On behalf of the government of Ontario, I want to tell the people of Ottawa that my thoughts are with them as they work to recover from the tornado and storm that impacted the Ottawa area yesterday; especially to the people of Dunrobin who saw huge damage to their homes and community", said Ford, who also thanked first responders and hydro crews. About 11,000 residents in the area were without power Friday because of the storm.

Three people were seriously injured as a result of the storm, including one person who has been listed in critical condition.

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson said the destruction from the twister looked like "some bomb was dropped from the air".

Katz also said that her legal team and client were "disappointed" with the "leaks and bullying" which have "tainted" this process. President Trump attacked Ford, asserting she would have gone to the police as a 15-year-old if the attempted rape was "that bad".

The Ontario government announced Saturday that it was activating the province's Disaster Recovery Assistance program in affected areas, while the Quebec government announced it would give the Red Cross $1-million to help with relief efforts.

Frightening footage has been recorded of a tornado as it tore through a city in Canada.

Toronto Hydro says in a tweet that it is working to restore about 4,300 power outages in the city.

Meteorologist Simon Legault said there was evidence of powerful winds between 112-137 miles per hour (180-220 kilometers per hour).
