Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has pledged to join Tory rebels and shut down Theresa May's Chequers deal to force the Prime Minister into a general election.

Mr Corbyn wanted his conference to be an opportunity to sell his alternative vision for Britain's economy, pressing his argument for the renationalisation of rail, mail and utilities, and to rally the party for a possible early election.

The move was quickly dropped but party leader Jeremy Corbyn refused calls to offer his support for the under-fire MP. "So if conference makes a decision I will not walk away from it and I will act accordingly".

Labour's conference starts today as a YouGov poll revealed 86% of members want a second referendum on the United Kingdom leaving the EU.

Two senior members of her political team responded to her humiliation last week in Salzburg by "wargaming" an autumn vote to win public backing for her plan, the paper said.

Conference delegate Steve Arloff, from Bradford West Labour Party, said Labour MPs should not assume they have "some God-given right to be selected unopposed, expecting it to be a job for life".

Britain's opposition Labour Party Deputy Leader Tom Watson delivers his keynote speech at the Labour Party Conference in Brighton, Britain, September 26, 2017.

Many activists believe that with Mrs May's plans in disarray following the rejection of her Chequers proposals by European Union leaders in Salzburg, the time is now right for Labour to throw its weight behind a fresh ballot.

Meanwhile, Mr Watson told the Observer there was "going to be pressure" for Labour to commit to another Brexit vote in its next election manifesto.

Mr Corbyn has long said that a "People's Vote" is not off the table for his party, and a source close to the leadership urged caution over an as-yet unknown motion, repeating the Labour leader's stance that he does not support a second referendum.

Britain's main opposition Labour Party would require large companies to reserve at least one third of the seats on their boards for workers, party leader Jeremy Corbyn said on Sunday.

He said: 'A new poll shows 86% of Labour party members want the British people to be given a final say on the UK's future relationship with Europe.

Echoing shadow Chancellor John McDonnell's sentiments that a second vote could "stoke xenophobia", Corbyn maintains the best solution is to push for a general election.

Melanie Crowley, a dyslexia support tutor, also from Birmingham, said: "I think people were conned into Brexit and it would be bad for the country".

"There is a lot of resentment, a lot of bitterness which I don't think will be very easily dispelled and there may be some Labour MPs who eventually leave on the basis of anti-Semitism issues", Fielding said.

Corbyn said on Sunday he voted to "remain and reform the EU" in the 2016 referendum on Brtain's European Union membership.

Former foreign secretary David Miliband said it was an "absolute dereliction of duty" for Labour not to say that the deal obtained by the Prime Minister must be put to the people.

The party has never formally rejected the option of a further vote but both Mr Corbyn and Mr Watson have indicated they would prefer the issue to be resolved by a general election.

Party chiefs will decide later Sunday which motions will be up for debate and votes at the four-day conference.
