NAFTA talks grind on, Canada quells talk of USA quota… NAFTA talks grind on, Canada quells talk of USA quota…

Canadian negotiators have said they will not be rushed and Trudeau reiterated on Sunday that he would not sign a bad NAFTA deal.

Freeland, who has visited Washington four weeks in a row to discuss NAFTA, gave no further details.

Investor concerns over the future of the 1994 pact, which underscores $1.2 trillion in trade, have regularly hurt stock markets in all three nations, whose economies are highly integrated.

Freeland credits Mexico with making significant concessions in its deal with the USA on automobiles and for permitting large wage increases for Mexican auto workers - something Canada and the US both wanted to stop the growing flow of automobile production into Mexico because of its cheap labour.

Asked for a reaction to Hassett's comments, a Freeland spokesman pointed to her repeated comments that Canada "will not be driven by a deadline but by reaching a good deal".

Trump came to power past year vowing to tear up NAFTA unless major changes were made to a pact he blames for the loss of US manufacturing jobs.

Palestinian killed by Israeli fire in new Gaza clashes: ministry
Since Gazans began holding weekly border protests on March 30, the Israeli army has killed 183 Palestinians and wounded thousands. Karim Mohammed Kallab, 25, died after being shot in the stomach during protests east of Gaza City, a ministry spokesman said.

After more than a year of talks to modernize the NAFTA trade pact between the United States, Mexico and Canada, the United States and Mexico reached a side deal in late August.

"We would like the government of the United States and the government of Canada to come to an agreement so the treaty can be trilateral, as it was originally signed", said Mr. Lopez Obrador, a veteran leftist who takes office in December. Canada also made clear the United States needed to withdraw the threat of auto tariffs for a deal to be possible. But the talks have hit an impasse over USA threats to impose tariffs on Canadian auto exports.

Freeland said she would return to Canada on Thursday ahead of a two-day meeting of female foreign ministers she is co-hosting in Montreal. Next week she will be in NY for a United Nations session.

US and Canadian officials trying to reach a deal on NAFTA are "very likely" to hold informal talks on the sidelines of a major United Nations meeting in the next few days, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Sunday.

The Globe and Mail newspaper on Thursday reported that US negotiators want Ottawa to agree to capping its auto exports to the United States at 1.7 million vehicles a year, something that Canadian industry sources dismissed as unacceptable.

Among the evidence that the finish line isn't far away: word from sources familiar with the negotiations that the US backed off in recent weeks on its demands for lucrative procurement projects.
