Power lines are destroyed in some areas, and as of Sunday morning, some 70,000 customers remained without power.

Residents of the Ottawa region are facing widespread power outages and school closures after two tornadoes struck on Friday.

A powerful tornado that carved a path through parts of Canada's capital snapped trees, tossed cars and obliterated dozens of homes leaving what the city's mayor on Saturday said resembled "a war scene".

Meanwhile, officials said firefighters are going door-to-door to determine whether structures are safe to re-enter.

The agency said that at nearly the same time a second, slightly less powerful twister, touched down in the south Ottawa neighbourhood of Arlington Woods.

"It's weird to be on the other end of things", said Carlson, who also ran a small business out of the home.

The premier was accompanied by city Mayor Jim Watson as he toured houses ravaged by the twister before in jumped the Ottawa River to Gatineau, Que.

Vatican and China announce agreement on bishop appointment
If not, "both sides will engage in a dialogue, and Beijing would eventually be expected to submit the name of another candidate". An eighth bishop, who died previous year , was also posthumously recognised by the Vatican.

He said that roofs were torn off buildings, including a school and apartment buildings, and estimated around 15,000 people had been displaced.

Ford also met residents who have taken refuge at a local high school, and praised the work of volunteers helping them.

The area of Dunrobin in Ottawa was hard hit, with 60 buildings fully or partially destroyed.

"We'll get everyone back on their feet", Ford told an afternoon news conference.

On Saturday night, the province announced it would activate a program offering emergency help beyond what private insurance covers to people affected by the tornadoes in Ottawa.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau urged residents to check on neighbors who might need help.

The Provincial Emergency Operations Centre has been working with municipal emergency management staff to provide supports that are needed.

"My husband had the wherewithal to say 'Let's just crouch down here by the refrigerator.' So we just huddled together".
