One of the most common warnings in the world of nutritional research is the risk of processed meat consumption.

Dr Anthony Nsiah -Asare, Director General of Ghana Health Service, has said breast cancer remains a major public health burden for the global community - the cancer considered universal among women worldwide.

By taking more drink free days women could reduce their risk of developing breast cancer and a range of other health conditions including liver and heart disease.

So are processed meats out?

Processed meats include bacon, ham, sausage, hot dogs, and deli meats.

The ACR continues to recommend that women of average risk (without additional risk factors) begin annual screening mammography at age 40, as 75 percent of breast cancers occur in women of average risk.The biggest risk factors for breast cancer are being female and increased patient age. 'Alarmist headlines'Lead author Dr Maryam Farvid, of the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health in the United States, recommends cutting down on the meat rather than eliminating it, the BBC said.

In other words, the study showed there might be a link between breast cancer and processed meat, but researchers have more work to do to really show that link exists.

Apart from cancer, blood pressure has also been noted as a possible health risk.

Processed meat refers to meat that has been transformed through salting, curing, fermentation, smoking, or other processes to enhance flavour or improve preservation.

"This systematic review and meta-analysis study reports significant positive associations between processed meat consumption with risk of breast cancer", the authors wrote. Another preservative, known as sodium nitrate, could potentially damage blood vessels. Prof Robert Pickard, of the Meat Advisory Panel, which describes itself as a group of healthcare professionals, scientists and researchers who provide independent and objective information about red meat and its role as part of a healthy, balanced diet, urged caution on the findings. However, the researchers believe there are benefits to reducing intake of the food.

"(You should) limit the consumption of alcohol, and increase fruits and vegetables", she added.
