Saudi writer 'murdered' in consulate

Turkey has summoned the Saudi ambassador to request the kingdom's "full cooperation" in an investigation into the disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who Turkish officials say was killed while visiting the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul.

The statement came out after reports published on Saturday night by various global media, citing Turkish officials, alleged that Khashoggi was killed at the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul.

Khashoggi, a 59-year-old veteran journalist who has lived in self-imposed exile in the USA since Prince Mohammed's rise to power, disappeared October 2 while on a visit to the consulate to get paperwork done to be married to his Turkish fiancée. "If he left, you must prove this, you will prove this, even if it's with visuals. Those who ask Turkish authorities where he is should ask what happened".

"If Khashoggi was indeed murdered inside a diplomatic facility, it is an act of terror that echoes Russian and Chinese tactics of extraterritorial, extrajudicial attacks on dissidents, meant to intimidate any who would speak out against the Saudi government, no matter where they may be, and giving the lie to official narratives of "reform" in Saudi Arabia", said Summer Lopez, PEN America's senior director of free expression programs.

In another contradiction, a Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated news website based in London, claimed that Khashoggi had been tortured inside the Saudi consulate. It would take some deft diplomacy, but perhaps the Trump administration could forge a quiet deal with Ankara that includes Brunson's release and the cancellation of Turkey's purchase of S-400 missiles from Russian Federation in exchange for robust collaboration with the United States against Saudi Arabia over the Khashoggi case.

A Turkish diplomatic source confirmed on Monday that the Saudi envoy had met deputy foreign minister Sedat Onal. "We have nothing to hide", he said.

"The airport exits and entrances are being examined".

Khashoggi has retained ambiguous ties to Saudi authorities, having held advisory positions in Riyadh and Washington - including to Prince Turki al-Faisal, who ran Saudi Arabia's intelligence agency for more than 20 years. "The chief prosecutor's office is investigating the issue".

The United Nations says Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is "very concerned" about the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi and violence against other journalists.

Yemeni activist Tawakkol Karman, the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, said it would be an "awful crime" if the claims of his death were true.

"What was explained to us is this: He was killed, make your funeral preparations", Kislakci said.

He disappeared just eight days later, with many pointing to his critique of Prince Mohammed and his policy as the reason behind his disappearance and alleged murder.

Khashoggi, 59, went to the consulate to obtain official documents ahead of his marriage to his Turkish fiancee.

On Sunday, Yasin Aktay, who advises Erdogan in his ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party, said he believed Washington Post contributor Khashoggi had been killed at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, adding that Turkish authorities further believed that a group of 15 Saudi nationals were "most certainly involved" in the matter. If they ask for that, of course, we will allow them.

Dujarric told reporters at United Nations headquarters in NY on Monday that Guterres "has been an advocate for journalists".

The journalist was known for his vocal criticism of Saudi Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman's foreign policy decisions towards Qatar, Canada, the war in Yemen, as well as his crackdown against dissenting voices in Saudi Arabia.
