Google exposed user data, feared repercussions of disclosing to public

Google+ Shutting Down After Bug Leaks Info of 500k Accounts Google shuts down Google+ following massive security flaw - GSMArena.com news

According to The Wall Street Journal, the company didn't disclose to its customers the data breach for fear of damaging its reputation as well as facing a potential for a regulatory inquiry.

Google eventually disclosed the data leak in a blog post yesterday.

Users who connect third-party apps with Google will get more granular control over what data gets shared. The lawsuit was blocked in the High Court on Monday. A bug in their Google+ People APIs, which potentially exposed the data of over 500.000 users and was promptly patched in March 2018.

That's the stunning revelation in a new report in The Wall Street Journal.

But it's not doing so exclusively out of concern for users' privacy: Smith admitted the network is not a success, saying "The consumer version of Google+ now has low usage and engagement: 90 percent of Google+ user sessions are less than five seconds".

Google launched Google+ in 2011 with an emphasis on privacy, and included fine-grained tools to let users decide what content to share with which of their contacts. The application programming interface allows developers to offer features of one app in another.

It's also probable that a rocket fired from the Quad Launcher won't do as much damage as one fired from a standard Launcher. Assuming the bundled items are worth a similar amount, that means players are saving $10-20 dollars.

While no evidence was found that indicates this bug was ever misused, it was determined that the complexity of protecting and operating a social network like Google+ was not a worthwhile endeavor when so few users actually used the service for any length of time.

The WSJ reported that the exposure dates back to 2015, although the company didn't comment on how long information was exposed.

As part of its response to the incident, the Alphabet Inc. unit plans to announce a sweeping set of data privacy measures that include permanently shutting down all consumer functionality of Google+, the people said.

Google's excuse is that it found no evidence of any of the data being misused, however, it also has no way of being sure of that.

The firm has also promised to institute new security rules, including limits around the types of use cases that are permitted to access consumer Gmail data. As a result, all European Union data protection authorities have jurisdiction to engage with Google on the breach. The company is henceforth shutting down Google+ to consumers. The search giant states that it wasn't able to maintain "a successful Google+ product that meets consumers' expectations".

In an unexpected blog posted today, Google revealed it was closing the rather unpopular social network Google+.
