Two smaller tremors struck the region immediately before and after the main quake.

The quake, which hit at 9.48am (NZT) was centred 124 kilometres east of Kimbe at a depth of 39.5km.

Chris McKee from Papua New Guinea's Geohazards Management department in the capital, Port Moresby, said authorities were still trying to confirm reports of damage or if a tsunami was generated.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said there was no longer a threat of tsunami waves after the quake.

Australia's Tsunami Warning Centre said its coastlines were not at risk.

The island of Bali was also struck by a magnitude 6 natural disaster on Thursday, the US Geological Survey said.

"A tsunami threat exists for parts of the Pacific located closer to the quake", the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a bulletin.

"A tsunami threat exists for parts of the pacific located closer to the natural disaster", the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said, but added more information was needed to assess if the risk radiated further.

The country is is still recovering from a magnitude-7.5 quake that hit around 900km to the west, which killed at least 100 people last February.

In March, a 6.6 magnitude quake struck nearby and no casualties or damage were reported.

A tsunami threat was triggered along the island's coasts.

Indonesia, one of the most disaster-prone nations on earth, straddles the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire", where tectonic plates collide and numerous world's volcanic eruptions and earthquakes occur.

The strong quake was felt in Denpasar on the holiday island of Bali, where panicked people fled from buildings.

Papua New Guinea is located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, which is the most seismically active region in the world. Officials say more than 80,000 people are living in temporary shelters or otherwise displaced.
