Five Washington children hospitalized with sudden paralysis

6 Minnesota kids diagnosed with rare, polio-like disease cute flaccid myelitis: Three new cases of rare polio-like illness emerge

Cases have been reported in the metro, central and northeastern Minnesota. Three other cases were reported in Pierce, Lewis, and Snohomish counties.

AFM could be triggered by a variety of causes, including common cold viruses, poliovirus (for which children should be vaccinated), and West Nile virus (which is carried by mosquitoes and can be prevented by using insect repellant).

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) said there have been 38 confirmed cases of AFM this year through the end of September. AFM causes patients' muscles to weaken and symptoms include sudden muscle weakness in the arms or legs, neck weakness or stiffness, drooping eyelids or a facial droop, difficulty swallowing or slurred speech.

"We've been vigilant", Sanford Health Pediatric Infectious Disease Physician Dr. Clifford Mauriello said.

Doctors now don't know a lot about how AFM spreads. "So, we've seen that there's an association between viruses, specifically enterovirus, in the past". Adults have likely been exposed to the virus that causes this and have some sort of immunity.

Umpire labels Kyrgios' effort 'borderline'
The Aussie looked solid in the opening set as Klahn - ranked 104 in the world - didn't look overly threatening to Kyrgios' charge. Kyrgios appeared exasperated and distracted at times as American qualifier Bradley Klahn took out the match in three sets.

Doctors are warning that a mysterious and paralyzing child illness similar to polio has spread to Chicago. Dr. Meade said sometimes people recover from the paralysis, but others don't recover even after several years.

It resembles polio, but unlike polio, there is no vaccine for AFM.

There was a national uptick in AFM cases in 2014.

"The CDC has acknowledged that 362 cases of AFM have been reported since 2014, indicating an increasing infection rate".

While there is no cure, health experts say you should take preventative measures including washing your hands or coughing into your elbow.
