The flaw meant some Google profile information that users had thought was private, such as a person's email address, occupation, gender or age, could have been viewed by third parties, the company said in a post on a corporate blog. Google believes that nothing nefarious was done with the information, however, and claims to have already fixed the problem.

While Google says there is no clear misuse of profile data that occurred as a result of this breach, MacMillan of the Journal says it raises questions about the company's commitment to user privacy.

"None of these thresholds were met in this instance", the firm said in its blog post.

Alphabet shares fell 2.3 percent to $1,140 at 1:14 p.m.in NY, after earlier dropping to $1,136.50, the lowest intraday price since July 5.

The Wall Street Journal obtained internal memos showing that Google's management was aware of the bug, but chose not to share it with the public to avoid scrutiny by regulators.

Project Strobe will also lead to Google account holders getting more fine-grained controls over the data they share with apps, which now have overly broad access to user information, Google said.

"Our review showed that Google+ is better suited as an enterprise product where co-workers can engage in internal discussions on a secure corporate social network", Google said.

Google+ will shut down for consumers at the end of next August, giving users time to download or transfer their data.

Google is pulling the plug on its flagship social network Google+ after data from up to 500,000 users was left exposed by a bug. Ben Smith, Google's VP of Engineering, disclosed more information about the security issue, and how it was discovered. Google also said that there is no evidence that and Profile data was misused. 'Given these challenges and the very low usage of the consumer version of Google+, we made a decision to sunset the consumer version of Google+. Google has sold an estimated 7 million Pixels over the past two years, nearly imperceptible next to the 3.6 billion phones shipped during that time, according to the research firm International Data Corp.

The issue apparently came about when a user granted permission to an app, allowing it to access their public data. A spokeswoman for Google didn't immediately return a request for further comment.

In response to the breach, Google is shutting down all consumer functionality of Google+.
