MADRID-Torrential rainstorms caused flash flooding on the Spanish island of Mallorca, killing at least six people and leaving nine others missing on October 10, authorities said.

At least nine people died, including two Britons, and six others were missing Wednesday after flash floods hit the Spanish holiday island of Majorca, tearing through village streets and sweeping away cars.

The Spaniard sprung into action after the town of Sant Llorenc des Cardassar, about 60 kilometres east of the island's capital Palma, was devastated by the rainstorm.

The British couple were reportedly in a taxi when they were caught in a flash flood in the town.

He told The Telegraph: "We are in contact with the Spanish authorities responding to flooding in Majorca, and urgently seeking updates from them".

Officials have said more than 600 rescuers and medical staff were at work and that emergency relief centres had been set up in sports halls.

At least another 12 people were still missing after the downpours, local media reported, though emergency services declined to confirm that figure.

The agency's data showed that some parts of the island received up to 23 centimeters (nine inches) of rainfall in around four hours on Tuesday evening, more than one third of the average amount that rains annually.

Their vehicle was swept away by a torrent of water near the coastal resort of S'Illot.

The floodwaters tore down trees, swept numerous cars and trucks into piles of twisted metal and buried streets under mud.

"It all happened in less than 10 minutes", one told Spanish TV.

Two men were found dead around midday on Wednesday, one in the northeastern town of Arta and another at S'illot further south on the coast. "We had to swim to try to survive".

Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal, who is from Mallorca, helped residents clear mud from their houses in Sant Llorenc.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called news of the flooding "devastating " on Twitter: "My solidarity and support goes out to the families and friends of victims and all the affected by these tragic floods".

The 17-time Grand Slam victor also provided shelter at his tennis academy in Manacor for displaced people whose homes were severely damaged by the flash flood.
