All the three people died in Sumenep district on Madura island after being crushed by collapsed buildings, according to Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of the National Disaster Managament Agency (BNPB).

A woman named Davey, who took refuge in the parking lot of a Bali hotel, said: "Wow, that was really strong and it lasted a long time".

"Many summit participants woke up and asked questions, but we immediately sent out information to them that there had been an natural disaster and the impact in Nusa Dua", he told AFP.

"I am sure Central Sulawesi will rise again", he said in a statement.

If any reminder were needed of Indonesia's treacherous tectonics, a magnitude 6 quake struck off Java and Bali islands early on Thursday, killing three people in Java, damaging buildings and sparking panic.

Some guests at the hotel in Nusa Dua, south of Bali's main global airport fled outside after the strong tremor shook the building.

The annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank are being held this week on Bali and attended by more than 19,000 delegates and other guests, including ministers, central bank heads and some country leaders.

"The quake was very big".

In a statement they told LADbible: "Since last week our local team have been involved in the search and rescue effort for those affected by the devastating natural disaster and tsunami in Sulawesi".

"All my neighbours were also running", said the mother of two.

Indonesia's disaster agency said Wednesday that it only needs tents, water treatment units, generators and transport from other countries as it responds to the Sulawesi quake and tsunami that killed more than 2,000 people.

"At the same time, if they ask us to help, if they're pointing "please look here, my family is under here", of course, we can't say "no", we have to dig".

The magnitude 7.5-quake and a subsequent tsunami razed whole swathes of Palu to the ground on Sep 28.

Thousands more remain missing since the twin disaster ravaged the city of Palu and surrounding areas.

Search teams look for victims in the quake. Though these missing people are yet to be accounted for in officially released figures, many could be presumed dead after searches have been called off.

In August, several major earthquakes on the island of Lombok, just east of Bali, caused widespread damage and killed hundreds of people.

The country is a particular hotspot for earthquakes as it is located on the Ring of Fire, a 40,000km area in the Pacific Ocean.
