The National Hurricane Center reported maximum sustained winds near 150 miles per hour with the potential to bring unsafe storm surge and heavy rains to the Florida panhandle area. It is the fourth strongest on record, and nothing this ferocious has ever hit the Panhandle.

"You just don't know when the next one is going down".

A Panhandle man was killed by a tree that toppled on a home, Gadsden County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Anglie Hightower said.

Hundreds of thousands of electricity customers were without power as of 6 p.m. ET Wednesday evening. According to the US Energy Information Administration. Downgraded to a tropical storm over south Georgia, it was weakening by the hour.

The head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Brock Long, told President Donald Trump in a briefing shortly before the eye of the storm hit that it was the "worst kind" of hurricane.

Reynolds said she and her friend even bought scratch-off tickets because they felt luck was in their favor after the storm.

He said the storm would still have hurricane-force winds as it pushed through Florida into Georgia, and tropical storm-force winds when it reaches the Carolinas, which are still reeling from post-Florence flooding.

Gov. Nathan Deal of Georgia issued an emergency declaration for 92 counties in the southern part of that state. But the fast-moving, fast-strengthening storm didn't give people much time to prepare, and emergency authorities lamented that many ignored the warnings and seemed to think they could ride it out. It was a relatively calm year except for hurricanes Michael and Florence last month.

Hurricane Michael is already causing damage in north Florida before making landfall.

Michael's minimum central pressure - a key measure of hurricane strength - was measured at 919 millibars when it made landfall. It was the most powerful hurricane to hit the continental U.S.in almost 50 years.

Michael's strong, well-developed core makes for a very powerful, windy storm on land.

Normal air pressure is about 1,010 millibars; when central pressure is significantly lower than that, things become more turbulent, with more air movement and wind kicking up.

As of 5 p.m. EDT, Michael is still a Category 3 major hurricane with its peak winds measuring 125 miles per hour.

The death, in an area west of state capital Tallahassee, was the first confirmed since Michael made landfall. The most recognizable measurement, the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, rates hurricanes from 1-5 based on their sustained wind speeds. Gusts may have clocked in higher, but the wind gauges broke.
