Apple Acquired Danish Visual Effects Startup Secretly - Spektral

Apple buys visual effects startup focused on machine learning Danish startup Spektral sold to Apple for $30 million

Copenhagen-based visual effects startup Spektral was acquired by Apple for $30 million at the end of 2017 in a deal that was only disclosed this week. The acquisition is particularly notable because Apple is said to be working on a homegrown AR system that could reportedly start shipping as early as 2020. It provides a path to do same in the digital cloud, photographers once did by hand with film and later did by mouse in photo editing software.

But all those math Ph.D.s at CloudCutout got restless and trained their machine-learning software to cut out a person from moving pictures without the need for an actual Hollywood-style green screen. Every time Apple makes an acquisition, it's because Apple has a specific idea of how to incorporate the target company's technology into its own line of products and services. It's touted as efficient enough to process footage from a smartphone's camera in real time at a rate of 60 frames and using only the built-in graphics card. Prior to the company's acquisition, it had raised $2.8 million Dollars in funding from investors that include Litecap and AMP Ventures as well as a €500,000 investment from SEED Capital in 2015.
