Death Toll Rises As Michael Moves Along US Coast Watch as Florida man gets rare look inside Hurricane Michael's eye

After Hurricane Michael ripped through the Florida Panhandle Wednesday with catastrophic winds and rain, many people were recovering from the devastation. "This is obviously the worst", said Stephanie Palmer, a FEMA firefighter and rescuer from Coral Springs, Florida.

In Panama City, 20 miles northwest of Mexico Beach, buildings were crushed and boats were scattered around.

Authorities said at least two people have died, a man killed by a tree falling on a Panhandle home and an 11-year-old girl killed by a tree falling on a home in southwest Georgia. "This was my sixth (hurricane), so I thought I was prepared". A year ago, the school welcomed students and families displaced by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. "I have been up since 3:30 or 4 a.m. emailing and checking on staff to see if they are safe".

The National Hurricane Center said early Thursday that the eye of Michael was about 90 miles northeast of Macon, Georgia, and about 45 miles west of Augusta.

Hurricane Michael's battering waves swamped streets and docks and shrieking winds splintered trees and rooftops.

All non-essential travel to and from the area, also known as Florida's Panhandle, has been suspended, but the busy cruise port of Tampa 250 miles to the south was able to breathe a sigh of relief as it largely avoided the worst effects of the storm.

Michael washed away white-sand beaches, hammered military bases and destroyed coastal communities, stripping trees to stalks, shredding roofs, toppling trucks and pushing boats into buildings.

And now you have Chiraq, what people call Chiraq, which actually, our murder rate is going down by 20 per cent every year. I have conversations that basically said that welfare is the reason why a lot of black people end up being Democrat.

The eerie footage shows Florida skies turn a deep purple after the huge Category 4 Hurricane Michael had passed over the state, leaving behind a path of destruction and killing at least two people.

The storm was expected to move across North Carolina and Virginia and push into the Atlantic Ocean by late Thursday or early Friday.

Emergency services carried out dozens of rescues of people caught in swiftly moving floodwaters in North Carolina.

For the big tourist destinations of Panama City Beach, Destin and Fort Walton, it could be months before they are back on an even keel as the hurricane destroyed homes, businesses and resorts, uprooted thousands of trees, and tore down power lines across the region.

According to Florida Power and Light, roughly 400 customers in Columbia County were without power after Michael made landfall, but power was restored within an hour.

Brad Rippey, a meteorologist for the US Agriculture Department, said Michael severely damaged cotton, timber, pecans and peanuts, causing estimated liabilities as high as $1.9bn and affecting up to 1.5 million hectares.

Michael also disrupted energy operations in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico as it approached land, cutting crude oil production by more than 40 percent and natural gas output by almost one-third as offshore platforms were evacuated.
