Security researchers have discovered a vulnerability in the WhatsApp messaging app that could enable hackers to take control of a smartphone when it receives WhatsApp video call.

"Just answering a call from an attacker could completely compromise WhatsApp", Tavis Ormandy, Google Project Zero researcher said on Twitter.

It is noteworthy to mention that it was only the WhatsApp app on Android and iOS that were affected due to the fact that they use Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) for video calls.

Google Project Zero does not disclose reported vulnerabilities until the bug is fixed or 90 days has elapsed.

The latest version of WhatsApp has fixed the issue; the Android version received the fix on September 28 and iPhone version got the same on October 3. Since the WhatsApp bug has been patched, the company recommended users should update to the latest version of the app on Android and iOS. As per the company, they have now fully fixed the bug issue, and they have given the details about it in the public domain. The web version of the app is not impacted because it relies on a different WebRTC protocol for video calls. She found a severe vulnerability in WhatsApp Messenger that could have given hackers complete remote control of your WhatsApp just by video calling you over the messaging app.

A spokesperson for WhatsApp told ZDNet there was no evidence the exploit had been used in the wild, and that it "cares deeply" about user security. We routinely engage with security researchers from around the world to ensure WhatsApp remains safe and reliable. Last month, Brian Acton went on record to say that he sold users' privacy when Facebook acquired WhatsApp.

Facebook said it reacted "promptly" to fix the issue once it was identified. One of many of such plans according to Acton, was to bridge Facebook and WhatsApp accounts of 128-but string which denotes a user's phone number.

The bug was first discovered by a security researcher at Google in August.
