Amazon's hiring tool used artificial intelligence to give candidates scores from one to five, similar to how online shoppers rate products on the site.

Amazon's recruiters looked at the recommendations generated by the tool when searching for new hires, but never relied exclusively on those rankings as told to Reuters anonymously by one of the people associated with the system.

Amazon has reportedly scrapped a recruitment tool powered by artificial intelligence (AI) that showed a clear bias against women. "They literally wanted it to be an engine where I'm going to give you 100 resumes, it will spit out the top five, and we'll hire those".

However, it quickly taught itself to prefer male candidates over female ones, according to members of the team who spoke to Reuters.

"The technology thought, "Oh, Amazon doesn't like any resume that has the word "women's" in it - captain of a women's chess club, women's soccer team, some all-women's universities", said Reuters correspondent Jeffrey Dastin". Amazon's model analysed CVs submitted to the company over a 10 year period - as men dominated technical roles during this period the system mistook gender as an indicator of success. Most came from men, a reflection of male dominance across the tech industry.

"Everyone wanted this holy grail", one of the sources said. Resumes that listed certain women's colleges were also docked points.

Amazon edited the programme to make it neutral again, but there was no guarantee that it wouldn't discover new ways to discriminate against female candidates. Amazon scrapped the project a year ago. While the program was operational, recruiters looked at the recommendations generated by the tool, but never relied soley on those rankings.

Around 55 percent of United States human resources managers said artificial intelligence, or AI, would be a regular part of their work within the next five years, according to a 2017 survey by talent software firm CareerBuilder.

The team, set up in Amazon's Edinburgh engineering hub, created 500 models concentrated on detailed job functions and locations. It would favor candidates that used language found on male candidate's resumes like "executed" and "captured".

Amazon's tryst with AI and machine learning isn't new.

The system was also found to be recommending candidates for unsuitable jobs; cue a facepalm moment.
