NT WorkSafe said it had been notified that the ranger had been taken by a crocodile approximately 206km south west of Yirrkala.

Gan Gan is a five-hour drive down a dirt track, which is the only major road in East Arnhem, from Yirrkala.

Police said a women believed to be an Aboriginal ranger had been fishing "waist-deep" in a river with her family in remote Arnhem Land in the Northen Territory when she was taken.

'Any death is traumatic, our thoughts are with family and relatives, ' Police Commander Tony Fuller told reporters.

Police worked with local rangers and the community to search nearby waterways for the woman.

Police said the woman, an Aboriginal ranger, was attacked as she was waist deep in water.

The incident occurred on the Gan Gan outstation where Yirralka Rangers work in the Laynhapuy Indigenous Protected Area.

NT WorkSafe has commenced an investigation into the incident after receiving reports of the attack from multiple witnesses.

Crocodile attacks claimed 14 lives in the Northern Territory between 2005 and 2014, according to research published a year ago.
