Asked whether Facebook would pay for some kind of identity theft monitoring service for affected users - as breached companies often do - a spokeswoman said: "Not at this time".

According to Rosen, the victims break down thus: Attackers stole name and contact details for 29 million users - including phone numbers and email addresses.

"As we look for other ways the people behind this attack used Facebook, as well as the possibility of smaller-scale attacks, we'll continue to co-operate with the FBI, the US Federal Trade Commission, Irish Data Protection Commission, and other authorities".

On Friday, the company said there were actually fewer users - 30 million - who were affected by the breach.

Facebook says third-party apps and Facebook apps like WhatsApp and Instagram are unaffected.

Late last month, Facebook disclosed a massive security vulnerability that it claimed affected some 50 million login tokens, but details were somewhat thin on its impact pending further investigation.

The company has a website its 2 billion global users can use to check if their accounts have been accessed, and if so, exactly what information was stolen. This will delete everything you've ever put on Facebook - profile information, photos, status updates, timeline posts - but won't include messages sent via Facebook Messenger.

The company said users' credit card information was not exposed.

This messaging breach could have impacted 400,000 users, including political groups. But three errors in Facebook's software enabled someone accessing "view as" to post and browse from the Facebook account of the other user.

Writing on Twitter, Johnson was quick to praise Koepka, saying: "Congratulations.Great season bro.POY well deserved". If he doesn't do it this time then I'm not sure - you've got to start fitting guys in, ' Rose said.

Beginning with a set of accounts controlled by the attackers, the exploit jumped from friends of those users to friends of friends, ballooning to the eventual total of 30 million accounts via an automated script.

Access tokens work as digital keys, letting those who hold them log into Facebook accounts without entering a password.

On September 25, the trend was identified as an attack, prompting programmers to close the vulnerability, which happened within two days, the tech chief said.

Facebook has set up a link where people can go and check if they were affected.

This bug was part of Facebook's "View As" tool, which allows allows you to view your profile as it would appear to someone else on Facebook.

On Friday, the company revealed that stolen data on 14 million users included birth dates, employers, education and lists of friends.

Earlier this year, Facebook came under fire for sharing heaps of data for over 87 million users with Cambridge Analytica.

Last month, Facebook launched an investigation with the FBI and released a statement in response the the breach.
