Serbian second seed Djokovic, who could move above Federer into second in the world rankings, beat South Africa's Kevin Anderson in a rematch of this year's Wimbledon final.

Djokovic remains on court to grab injured Rafael Nadal's year-end No 1 ranking and he will now face the victor of the second semi-final between top seed and defending champion Roger Federer and highly-rated Croatian youngster Borna Coric.

Yet he made an aggressive start against Nishikori to take a 4-1 lead in the opening set.

The 37-year-old will next face Croatian power-hitter Borna Coric, who dumped Australia's Matthew Ebden out of the tournament 7-5 6-4.

Touted as a potential future multiple Grand Slam victor, fourth seed Zverev eased past Kyle Edmund to reach his first Shanghai semi-final.

The 31-year-old Serb saved a set point against Anderson in an intense opener, before taking control in the tiebreak.

Zverev needed only one opportunity to break his opponent in either set as he became the fifth player to book his place at the season-ending ATP Finals in London.

Djokovic, who endured a turbulent last season with injury and off-court issues, said they were "both different players" now. "I think I can be very happy with my level of play this week".

Zverev became the first German to seal a spot in successive years in the season-ending event since six-times Grand Slam victor Boris Becker (1994-96).

"I wasn't - I feel like - playing as well as I'm playing today", he warned.

"I'm playing some of my best tennis, especially against Stan (Wawrinka in the first round) and (Juan Martin) Del Potro yesterday before he got injured".

Interestingly, though, that match did have very close data - Federer had eight break points on return, compared to six for Nishikori - while only winning 52% of points in the match, a very low figure for a straight-set victory.
