Authorities say they have no confirmed cases of the nervous system condition called acute flaccid myelitis, or AFM, in NY.

Two children in IL have been diagnosed with a rare Polio-like illness that is seeing a sudden uptick, mainly in kids, across the US.

The condition has gained attention in the past week after the parents of a 2-year-old Batavia girl came forward to share their story to raise awareness.

Health officials say enteroviruses (polio and non-polio), West Nile virus (WNV) and viruses in the same family as WNV may cause AFM.

The disease is not new but the cause remains unknown.

An Illinois Department of Public Health statement said they are working with doctors to collect information on the nine cases reported.

The CDC began tracking the cases in 2014 after seeing an uptick in the number of cases. She is now one of 38 children to develop partial paralysis from acute flaccid myelitis (AFM) in 16 USA states so far this year.

Symptoms can include arm or leg weakness, loss of muscle tone, respiratory failure and even death.

Earlier this week, six children in Minnesota were diagnosed with this "rare" disease.
