Another Australian is to join the World Golf Hall of Fame, with three-time major championship victor Jan Stephenson among the five to be inducted next year.

South African Retief Goosen was recognised in the Male Competitor Category while former Augusta National chairman Billy Payne and all abilities golf advocate Dennis Walters joined under the Lifetime Achievement Category along with major victor and women's golf advocate Peggy Kirk Bell.

Goosen, who won 10 times on the Sunshine Tour - including the South African Open Championship in 1993 and 1995 - was honoured for a career which has been exemplary all over the world.

The five were among a group of 15 finalists that included Graham Marsh, Corey Pavin, Hal Sutton, Susie Maxwell Berning, Beverly Hanson, Sandra Palmer, Dottie Pepper, Jim Ferrier, Catherine Lacoste and Calvin Peete.

The 66-year-old Stephenson has been confirmed by the World Golf Hall of Fame as an inductee for the class of 2019 in the female competitor category.

Jan Stephenson's status as one of the greats of Australian golf has been re-affirmed with her election into the World Golf Hall of Fame overnight. "The Goose" also spent 250 consecutive weeks between 2001 and 2007 ranked in the Official World Golf Ranking's top 10.

Australia's Stephenson, the 1974 LPGA Rookie of the Year, captured 20 titles worldwide, 16 of them in LPGA events.

Walters was paralyzed in a golf cart accident at age 24 but the American became an elite disabled player, making more than 3,000 appearances around the world at clinics and special performances. He's one of 11 honorary lifetime PGA of America members.
